Help
How your documents are stored, how to keep a copy, and a few things worth knowing.
Where your documents live
Linefold keeps your library in this browser’s storage on this device. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so nobody else can read your documents, including us.
Because the library belongs to this browser, a different browser or another device starts with an empty library. To move documents, export them and import them on the other side.
Once you have three documents, Linefold asks the browser to keep its storage permanently. Chrome usually decides on its own, Firefox may show a prompt, and Safari only partly honors the request.
Backing up
Clearing this site’s data in your browser settings deletes your documents. Keep a copy.
- Whole library: in the library, open the menu next to New document and choose Export all (.zip). Folders become folders in the .zip.
- One document: open it, choose Export, then Markdown (.md), HTML page (.html), or PDF (print dialog).
- Restore: choose Import files… from the same menu, or drop the .zip onto the library. Undo removes an import you didn’t mean.
Private windows
Some browsers don’t allow storage in private windows. Linefold still opens there and tells you that changes last only until you close the window, with a button to export everything as a .zip.
Two tabs
Your library is open in one tab at a time, so two tabs can never overwrite each other. A second tab offers Use here to take over.
Working offline
Once Linefold is open, writing, searching, and exporting need no connection. Opening it needs one.
Phones
Linefold works in your phone’s browser, with Write and Preview sized for small screens. Split is for wider screens.
Keyboard shortcuts
- ⌘K search every document
- ⌘\ switch between Write, Split, and Preview
- ⌘⇧F focus mode, Esc to leave
- ⌘F find, ⌘⌥F find and replace
- ⌘/ every shortcut on one sheet
On Windows and Linux, use Ctrl in place of ⌘ and Alt in place of ⌥.
What’s next
Publishing a document as a web page and syncing your library across devices are the next things we are building.
